Pika

Editor's Review

Pika is the fun one — the short-clip video generator that leaned fully into "directable" rather than competing on realism, and Pika 2.5's Pikaffects (physics-based one-click transformations: melt, explode, crush, inflate, cake-ify) went genuinely viral on social. Add improved lip sync, Pikaframes, and sound effects, and you have the most entertaining 5–10 seconds in AI video. Pricing: Basic free (80 monthly credits, Pika 2.5 at 480p only, watermark-free downloads, commercial use listed); Standard $10/month ($8 annual, 700 credits, all resolutions to 1080p, fast generations, Pikaffects); Pro $35/month ($28 annual, 2,300 credits, fastest priority); Fancy $95/month ($76 annual, 6,000 credits). Credits burn per attempt — feature, model, duration, and resolution dependent — not per finished video. Retries cost real money, and the credit math is opaque: high-res upscales and complex effects eat credits fast. Honest limits: no timeline editor, no multi-shot or storyboard mode (those live on Runway), clips stay in the 5–10 second range, no brand kit or team workspace. Who should pay? Social creators who want maximum fun-per-dollar — Pika is ~30–40% better value per video-second than Runway. Who shouldn't? Anyone producing client work: Runway (Standard $12/month annual, 625 credits; Gen-4 with camera control, Act-One character consistency, built-in timeline editor) justifies its premium in output quality and production tooling. Pika is the toy box; Runway is the studio. For viral effects and memes, Pika; for anything with a client watching, Runway.
