Codeium no longer exists as a product — it became Windsurf in November 2024, which became Devin Desktop in June 2026. But the name still matters because it anchors the most dramatic corporate saga in AI tooling: the reported $3 billion OpenAI acquisition collapsed in summer 2025; Google then paid ~$2.4 billion to license Windsurf's technology and hired CEO Varun Mohan, co-founder Douglas Chen, and ~40 staff into Google DeepMind; days later Cognition (the Devin team) acquired what remained — roughly 210 employees and the product — for ~$250 million. On June 2, 2026, Cognition rebranded the editor to Devin Desktop via over-the-air update; windsurf.com now redirects to devin.ai, and the Cascade agent was succeeded by "Devin Local." What survives: a genuinely useful free tier (~25 credits/month, ~20 chats/day) and Pro at $20/month (doubled from $10 at the June rebrand), Teams at $30/user/month. Cognition's SWE-1.5 model was free for all users for ~3 months during the 2026 billing migration. Who should pay? Nobody should "buy Codeium" — but Devin Desktop at $0–20/month remains the value pick for guided agentic coding workflows, especially for developers who found Cursor's $20-plus-overages math ($60–100/month realistic) too rich. The honest caveat: most of the people who made Windsurf great now work at Google, so you're betting on Cognition's roadmap — merging IDE assistance with Devin-style autonomous execution — which could be either amazing or disruptive. Versus Cursor: less polished, smaller community, weaker multi-file editing; but cheaper and more hand-holding.
