Editor's Review
Amazon Q Developer is effectively a dead product walking — and that's the single most important thing to know. AWS blocked all new Q Developer signups on May 15, 2026, and existing access terminates April 30, 2027. AWS is pointing everyone at Kiro, its newer agentic IDE. You cannot sign up for Amazon Q today, which makes the pricing table (Free: 50 agentic requests/month; Pro: $19/user/month with 1,000 requests, IP indemnity, and private repo customization) purely academic.
While it lived, Q's pitch was AWS-ecosystem depth: Lambda/EC2/S3-aware code suggestions, security scanning tuned to AWS best practices, and transformation tooling for Java upgrades. Inside the AWS walled garden it was genuinely useful. Outside it — for general-purpose coding, multi-file refactors, or anything not touching AWS services — it trailed Cursor and Claude Code by a wide margin, and the UI never felt as polished as either.
Who should care? Nobody new. If you're an existing Q user on AWS, start planning your migration now: Kiro is the AWS-sanctioned successor for agent-based coding, while Cursor ($20/month) or Claude Code (bundled with Claude Pro $20/month) are the stronger general-purpose picks. Treat any "Amazon Q vs X" comparison on this site as historical context, not a buying guide — the buying decision was made for you in May 2026.
