ChatGPT's October 2026 update is its biggest in two years. GPT-6 rolled out to all users on October 7-8: paid tiers (Plus/Pro/Business) got GPT-6 Sol, while free and Go users got GPT-6 Luna. The new Intelligent UI renders responses as clickable buttons, forms, charts, and maps instead of plain text. Dots—personal AI agents running on GPT-6 Astra—launched September 29, with every Pro subscriber getting one Dot whose conversations don't count against usage. The pricing shakeup matters more. OpenAI announced a new Pro 500 tier at $500/month (8x faster token generation, 25x Plus usage), while the existing $200 Pro gets downgraded effective October 30: Codex/Work usage drops from 20x to 10x Plus, and GPT-6 Pro weekly messages cut from 200 to 100. The old "$100/$200 Pro naming confusion" is now moot—it's Plus $20 / Pro $200 (shrinking) / Pro 500 $500. API prices dropped 50% on September 22 (permanent): Sol now $2/$10 per million input/output tokens, matching Anthropic's Sonnet 5.5. GPT-6.1 Sol was announced at one-fifth Astra's cost with near-parity benchmarks, targeting developers. Who should pay? Plus users just got the best upgrade in two years (GPT-6 Sol + Intelligent UI). But Pro subscribers face effective devaluation on October 30—heavy users will be pushed toward the $500 tier. Free users now get GPT-6 Luna with unlimited text, a genuine upgrade. Versus Claude: ChatGPT wins on ecosystem breadth and the new agentic features; Claude still leads on long-context coding.
